The New Normal

If I have to sum up 2020 in one word, it’s unprecedented. It may be clear to most of us that the new normal is a constant state of uncertainty, a period of extraordinary changes. Businesses and schools closed, exams deferred, graduations canceled, WFH and pressure from home schooling the kids, weddings moved and vacations postponed. All of a sudden our life’s routines have dramatically changed. And It’s a massive challenge to get used to all the changes at once.

Domestics challenges aside, our cycling routine is  affected too. The sudden surge of cycling enthusiasts has a created public concerns on road sharing and safety. Fines and compounds enforced. No cycling on highways, bells, brakes, helmet etc. All of a sudden cycling becomes a top trending topic with mixed reactions. I’m not going into the debate on who is to be blamed. It's time to adapt, be creative and think positively, which is a better choice than sinking into deep frustration and the “us versus them” mindset.

But let’s be real. Change is difficult because we are a creature of habits and routines. Our life is the sum of our behaviours, thoughts and feelings, which all of us have learned and incorporated into ourselves throughout our lives. We’re simply just too used to and comfortable with our life’s routines. Consistency, discipline and realistic targets are the key success factors for implementing change that stick. I just need to change my cycling routine or risk hanging my bikes up the wall again. That would indeed be depressing.

The silver lining of WFH is now I have the flexibility to change the routine of beating the highly stressful morning traffic to doing short 30-45 minutes short distance ride every day. IMHO, comparatively it’s a better workout rate than the 2 day ride sessions on weekends. Life goes on and finds new ways. Let’s not give up our hopes and dreams. Let’s unstuck, move forward, adapt and make the best out of the situation.

Pay attention to our mental health by taking care of our well being. Find the time for with activities we enjoy like cycling. Reach out to friends and families. Enjoy the little things in life.

For cycling addicts, please ride safe, observe the regulations, don’t run the red lights. Gambatte!
